Legend has it that the salt spring that flows from Qoripujio Mountain is the tears of Ayar Kachi in Inka mythology, who was one of the 4 brothers who founded the great Inka Empire.

The God Wiraqocha made the 4 brothers come out of a cave to found a great empire; Ayar Kachi threw a stone at the Qoripujio Mountain and his brothers, fearful of his strength and power, trapped him with tricks in the cave, preventing him from being the founder of the empire. Ayar Kachi's tears became the beautiful salt flat that covers the side of the mountain. .
